A walk around one street

One street and a couple of side roads are enough for a short walk. Look at old shop signs, peek into a courtyard, and find a bench in the shade.

Start near a bus stop and finish close to it. That makes it easy to head home if it rains. An hour is plenty for a first visit, with no long list of places to see.

Try the other side of the street on the way back. A different angle often reveals details you walked past earlier.

What to bring

A small bag for the day

Water, a snack, a light jacket, and a charged phone. Check the weather before leaving and save a map of the area.

Pack heavier items close to your back. Keep anything you will need along the way in an outer pocket. A spare bag is handy for a wet umbrella.

Before heading out of town, check the return journey. A saved timetable helps when there is no phone signal.

By the water

Following the river

A riverside path suits a day with no fixed route. Follow the water to the next bridge, then return through the nearby streets.

The wind feels stronger along an open riverbank than between buildings. An extra layer can be useful even on a warm day.

Choose a place to stop away from the cycle path. A flask and a small snack make it easy to stay by the water a little longer.
